True Believers

The news was shocking. The 18 year old son of a successful NFL coach was found dead. The cause of an apparent suicide. All of this happening as Tony Dungy's Indianapolis Colts were rolling over the opposition for 13 straight weeks. They were the last undefeated team until a few weeks ago.
It is hard to imagine losing your teenage son especially around the holidays. It is even more heartbreaking to know that this tragedy is happening to a man of great faith. A true believer, a Christian who happens to be in the public eye due to his profession.
But Coach Dungy never lost his belief that God is with us at all stages of our lives. During his statement today he did not blame or try to explain the reason why his son died.
"We were blessed to have him for 18 years" said Dungy. "Although our family is grieving we still know that God is with us and is watching over us."
Many years ago I met Tony Dungy at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event while he was a member of the San Francisco 49ers. He was soft spoken...Looking rather thin, not at all what you expected a NFL defensive back to look like. He had success at his position where he was a member of the 1978 and 1979 Pittsburgh Steeler team that won back to back Super Bowls.
As he told us of what God and his faith had meant to him, you had to come away impressed.
He had accomplished all of this goals while remaining humble and grounded.
Coach Dungy even took some time to talk to a young ;man who was in awe of every word he spoke.
True believers never doubt their God or their faith because they know how mercyful and steadfast God is. True believers also know they are mortal and are not exempt from the challenges we face in life. Tony Dungy is showing all of us how to deal with adversity in a very public way. Never put your job ahead of your family or your life. Nothing will ever be nor will equal the support you receive from those who love you. Embrace your faith even in times of confusion and tragedy. Most of all, know that God will always be there to lean on and to guide you through out your days on earth. If we all could have the true belief that Tony Dungy has then nothing would stop us from living the life God has for us. May we learn from him and keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.
